End of Week 1: What is Art

  • Which definition of art from the video do you identify most with?

  • Do you have an alternate definition you would prefer?

  • Any definition from this video that frustrated, angered you or that you disagree with?

I really enjoyed watching the video on the different definitions of art. Everyone defines art differently though their own their own experiences and observations and one of the definitions that stood out to me the most was by John Galswothy. "What is grievous, dompting, grim, about our lives is that we are shut up within ourselves, with an itch to get outside ourselves. And to be stolen away from ourselves by art is a momentary relaxation from that itching, a minute's profound, and as it were a secret, enfranchisement." I believe that art is an expression of one's emotions, feelings, experiences and thoughts. It is a good way of letting go of everything that is bubbling inside you onto a canvas or paper. And people who will look at your painting, can step into your shoes and relate to it in some way because humans share many emotions or similar experiences. One definition that I didn't entirely agree with was "all art is but imitation of nature". That quote can only be applied to certain types of work because there are many artistic works that don't have anything to do with nature. Art isn't always about painting trees and flowers, it is very broad.
